Chevrolet History
With over a century of all-American history, Chevrolet has earned its reputation for reliability and innovation. From its humble beginnings in 1911 to its current status as a world-renowned automotive brand, here’s a rundown of this legendary automaker’s history.
The Early Days
On November 3, 1911, Louis Chevrolet and William Crapo “Billy” Durant officially founded the Chevrolet Motor Company. In 1912, the brand would release its first automobile — the Chevrolet Classic Six. In 1918, the brand debuted its first truck, which was an immediate success amongst hard-working farmers and laborers.
Chevrolet weathered the Great Depression thanks to its reputation for high-quality, reliable vehicles. In 1934, the brand’s 10 millionth vehicle rolled off the assembly line. During World War II, the company supported the American military by dedicating its production power to the defense of freedom.
Innovations in Style and Performance
During the post-war economic boom, a growing number of families sought reliable personal transportation. Thanks to their affordable prices, stylish designs and reliable performance, Chevrolet vehicles skyrocketed in popularity. The legendary Corvette made its debut in 1953, while the 1960s saw the arrival of the Camaro and the Chevelle. Chevy cemented its status as an all-American icon with its iconic 1975 ad campaign, “Baseball, Hot Dogs and Apple Pie.”
The Chevy truck lineup became even more capable with the introduction of the Crew Cab configuration. With more available seating, Chevy made its versatile trucks into comfortable family vehicles. The legendary Silverado hit the market in 1999, and has been one of America’s favorite pickups ever since.
Driving toward the Future
Chevrolet continues its legacy of innovation with its growing lineup of practical, fun, and capable models. The automaker kicked off its electric vehicle lineup in 2011 with the introduction of the Volt. In 2019, the brand introduced the spectacular eighth-generation Corvette, unique for its mid-engine design and striking proportions. And Chevrolet continues to lead the way with groundbreaking models like the Blazer EV and the Silverado 1500 EV, along with futuristic features like hands-free Super Cruise™ driving technology.
